My process for writing the essay for my Finals was a very long yet informative process. I was stuck between two things I wanted to find out: How does the criminal justice system go through choosing the jury during specific cases and are they prejudice on choosing people depending on the person being convicted? And What is the process of someone becoming a cop or being in law enforcement? Do race and background play a part?. I ended up going with the process of being a juror and what the juror has to go through to even be part of the jury. The reason I chose this topic was that I have family members who are in law enforcement who have told me I would be a great detective because I would be able to play a good undercover role. I don’t necessarily know anyone who has ever been to jury duty accepts for some of my teachers. My teachers would only be gone for about 2-3 days which was a lot and I was in the 8th grade so I wouldn’t really complain. I learned that the process of becoming a juror is a very long process and causes an impact on one’s mental state depending on the case. To be a jury you go through a series of background checks and are asked a lot of questions. Race and ethnicity do play a role in the selection of choosing jurors for trial although it shouldn’t. There should be a “blind eye” to race, color, and ethnicity. I found out that based on a statewide jury selection record, prosecutors remove 20% of African Americans are removed whereas only 10% of whites are removed. Meanwhile, defense attorneys removed 22% white jurors and 10% African American jurors. About 90% of jurors of color were struck with peremptory strikes. This information did not only shows me that there is a sort of racial discrimination when it comes to select jurors for cases but that there is a high level of unfairness for defendants who are colored. In this paper, I wish I would’ve done the APA citing better and I should’ve added the ways I used ethos, pathos, and logos.
